Hydrogen-rich water combined with traditional Chinese medicine compound in the treatment of kidney stones: a randomized controlled prospective clinical trial.
A four-group trial in one hundred people with kidney stones compared hydrogen-rich water, an herbal formula, their combination and a group receiving neither addition. The reported response percentages do not establish stone clearance or a proven extra benefit from hydrogen-rich water.
What was compared?
The single-hospital prospective trial randomly assigned participants to four groups for twelve weeks. All received the basic care described as guideline-based in the abstract. The additions were hydrogen-rich water, Ye-Shi-Shi-Lin-Formula, or both; the comparison group received neither addition.
What response rates were reported?
The abstract reports an overall response in 28% of the group receiving neither addition, 32% receiving hydrogen-rich water, 76% receiving the herbal formula and 80% receiving both. It does not explain the full response definition in the abstract. These numbers should not be relabelled as stone-free rates or cure rates.
Does the combination show an extra benefit?
The combination and herbal-formula percentages differ by four percentage points. The abstract does not supply the uncertainty range or a statistical comparison needed to establish an added benefit on that outcome. A numerical difference alone cannot settle the question. The paper also reports changes in metabolic and oxidative-stress measures, which are different from patient-important outcomes such as avoiding surgery or recurrent stones.
What remains unknown?
The abstract does not fully describe blinding, the response criteria, long-term recurrence or comparative safety results. It cannot establish that an addition replaces standard stone care or is suitable for an individual. This explanation is based on the abstract and does not repeat its broad claims of established efficacy as independent facts.
