Peru: General Directorate of Medicines, Supplies and Drugs (DIGEMID)
Audience: administrators-policy, researchers-scientists ยท Review state: published
The national authority
The General Directorate of Medicines, Supplies and Drugs, known as DIGEMID, is Peru's national medicines regulator, a directorate within the Ministry of Health responsible for medicines, biological products, medical devices and health supplies.
Unlike the autonomous-agency model common elsewhere in the region, DIGEMID operates inside the ministry structure, which ties product regulation closely to national health policy and the public procurement system.
How products enter the market
Medicines require a sanitary registration granted after evaluation of quality, safety and efficacy, with defined routes for new products, generics and products already assessed by reference authorities. The directorate maintains the national product register and licenses pharmaceutical establishments.
Medical devices require sanitary registration with risk-based requirements, and DIGEMID runs the national pharmacovigilance and technovigilance systems that monitor products after they reach the market.
Regional and international role
DIGEMID participates in Latin American and Andean regulatory cooperation, and Peru's public-health priorities, including its large public-procurement programs, give the directorate's quality-evaluation work direct population impact.
The directorate has been strengthening its reliance-informed pathways and electronic processes in step with regional regulatory modernization.
Using this profile
DIGEMID publishes registers, guidance and alerts in Spanish through its official portal, which is the primary source for current rules and listed in this profile's internal reference record.
For cross-country comparison: DIGEMID illustrates the ministry-integrated regulator: product registration and surveillance run from inside the health ministry, closely coupled to public procurement and national health programs.
Limitations
Educational profile of a national regulatory system, current as of drafting. It simplifies routes and classes and is not legal, regulatory, or clinical advice. Filing and compliance decisions must be confirmed against the authority's current published rules and, where needed, professional regulatory counsel.
