Metabolism and Energy
Metabolism includes the chemical processes that release energy, build body materials and manage stored fuel.
#Metabolism includes breaking down and building up
NIGMS describes metabolism as the chemical changes that provide energy and materials the body needs. Catabolic pathways break larger molecules into smaller ones, usually releasing energy. Anabolic pathways use energy to build larger molecules, such as making proteins from amino acids. OpenStax likewise treats both kinds of reaction as essential to life.
Metabolism is therefore broader than a description of how many calories someone burns. This page explains the biological processes; it cannot estimate a person's energy needs, diagnose a metabolic disorder or recommend a diet.

#ATP links energy supply with cellular work
NIGMS describes adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, as a major energy source for biochemical reactions. Cells continually produce and use it for work that includes muscle contraction, signalling and making DNA and RNA. Cellular respiration is one route by which energy from food is captured in ATP, and mitochondria have an important role in that process.
ATP is part of an ongoing cycle of energy transfer, not a synonym for feeling energetic. Understanding its role does not establish that an ATP-related product or supplement will improve health. No supplement or performance claim is evaluated here.

#Enzymes and regulation organise the pathways
NIGMS explains that enzymes speed up metabolic reactions and can be used repeatedly. Cells can change the activity of pathways by changing the availability of key enzymes. Its lactase example shows an enzyme breaking the sugar lactose into smaller molecules. Metabolism is thus a collection of connected and regulated reactions, rather than a single process that is simply fast or slow.
A general mechanism cannot reveal why an individual has fatigue, a weight change or an abnormal test. This account supplies vocabulary for learning, not a personal metabolic assessment, medicine instruction or nutrition plan.
